V. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
Effects of Exposure:
To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of scandium oxide have not been thoroughly investigated and recorded.
Scandium oxide is considered a rare earth metal. The rare earths are moderately to highly toxic. Rare earth oxides are much less toxic than chlorides or citrates. The rare earth elements exhibit low toxicity by ingestion exposure, but are highly toxic by the intraperitoneal route. The subcutaneous route is moderately to highly toxic. Exposure to the rare earths produces skin granulomas and requires extensive protection to prevent such exposure. (Sax, Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials)
Inhalation: May cause irritation.
Ingestion: Animal experiments indicate that scandium oxide is essentially unabsorbed when ingested. Thus, it was classified a non-toxic and is often used as a nutritional marker in man and animals.
Skin: May cause irritation.
Eye: May cause irritation.
Chronic Effects: Inhalation: May cause congestion, coughing, granuloma in lung and hemoglobinemia. No other chronic health effects recorded.
Medical Conditions Aggravated by the Chemical: Pre-existing respiratory disorders.

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:
INHALATION: Remove to fresh air, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention.
INGESTION: Give 1-2 glasses of milk or water and induce vomiting, seek medical attention. Never induce vomiting or give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.
SKIN: Remove contaminated clothing, brush material off skin, wash with soap and water, seek medical attention.
EYES: Flush eyes, including under upper and lower lids, with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes using an eyewash fountain. Get medical attention.

VII. SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES
Steps to Be Taken If Spilled or Released: Wear appropriate respiratory and protective equipment specified in section VIII. Isolate spill area and provide ventilation. Sweep up or vacuum up using a HEPA air filter and place in a closed container for proper disposal. Avoid creating dusting conditions.
Waste Disposal Method: Dispose of in accordance with Local, State and Federal regulations.
VIII. SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION
Respiratory Protection: NIOSH approved dust respirator.
Ventilation: Use local exhaust to maintain concentrations at low exposure levels. General exhaust is recommended.
Protective Gloves: Rubber gloves.
Eye Protection: Safety glasses.
Other Protective Clothing or Equipment: Protective gear suitable to prevent contamination.
IX. SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage: Store in a cool, dry place in tightly closed containers. Avoid breathing dusts. Avoid direct or prolonged contact with skin and eyes. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. Do not rub eyes with soiled hands.
Other Precautions: Dry powders can build static electricity charges when subjected to the friction of conveying, mixing or sliding. To prevent ignition, provide adequate precautions, such as electrical grounding, or inert atmospheres when material is used in the presence of flammable materials.
Work Practices: Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure at low levels. Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly before eating and smoking. Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air. Maintain eyewash capable of sustained flushing, safety drench shower and facilities for washing.
